All Chainsaws Require Protective Gear
When you start up your chainsaw and get down to business, you run the risk of injury from a variety of sources. Luckily, there is a wealth of gear on the market to protect your body from the rending, tearing blade you hold in your hands. From head to toe, no matter what brand of chainsaw you use, no matter what size the blade on the end, it is important to dress yourself in the proper safety gear.
There are many ways to get hurt while cutting wood with a chainsaw. Branches can spring suddenly loose and whip toward you with a lot of speed and force. They can break bone, but your face is also at risk. The engine of the saw is very loud and can cause damage to your inner ear. Wear a black helmet with hearing defenses.
The helmet is very useful in timber operations when one man is on the ground and another up in a tree. Tools, equipment, tree branches-all can fall from very high up and cause severe injury or even death. With a proper helmet on, though, the force of impact is distributed around the shell. You might have a slight headache afterwards but you will not suffer permanent damage.
If you are using an Echo chainsaw, you might want to limit yourself to protective gear made by that particular manufacturer. That is fine, but remember that, while not all gear is created equal, it is all interchangeable. A vest from Stihl will work just as well as one from Echo.
With your head and ears safe, we turn to the eyes. Some chainsaw operators will use full safety goggles; others rely on a face mask. The mask attaches to the helmet like a visor, blocking flying wood chips from getting to your face. If your chainsaw is spitting sawdust, you need to sharpen your blade. The large lattice allows full visibility while blocking the detritus flying off the blade.
Last we have chaps and boots. The chaps or trousers are made out of special material that resists the cutting chain, offering some protection. Any good steel-toed boot will work to protect your feet.
How about a different brand of saw? Will that change what you wear? No, it won't. A McCulloch chainsaw is the same as any other brand: they all require safety equipment. There are even legal requirements regarding safety gear. Check with the authorities in your area. Always obey the law!
