Kids Do The Dumbest Things
Are you old enough to remember that old TV comedy show that showed all the crazy things little kids get up to? While it was an affectionate and humorous look at children, the show also showed just how crazy kids can be. Children seem to think the whole world is their playpen. That includes the kitchen and all the things inside it.
There are a lot of amusing things that children do with kitchen implements. All kids love to play with an electric hand mixer, for instance. If it's got a battery and is portable, even better. The boys can go play space invaders with it and the girls can mix up mud cookies. Unfortunately, when the battery runs down, they just leave it, thinking it's broken or of no use to them anymore. Meanwhile, you're tearing your hair out, wondering what happened to your mixer.
These sorts of things are just funny, at least in retrospect. At the time they're annoying, but nobody got hurt. However, there are other things in the kitchen that can be downright lethal if they get into children's hands.
Take that Wusthof knife set that you love so much, for example. Believe it or not, a small child might think it looks like something to play with. You wouldn't think so. After all, knives just look dangerous, while even guns don't look dangerous until you learn about what they can do.
Some kids don't seem to understand that knives are dangerous and should only be handled by adults. They think that if mom can use a knife to cut a cake, they can take it outside to cut up a cardboard box or dig in the soil. Children think they are invincible. They don't understand that one slip of the knife can have devastating consequences.
You don't need to lock away your knives in a cupboard like you would a gun or a rifle, but some precautions are in order, nonetheless. While you may want to display it, make sure it is well out of the reach of children. It is much better to store your knives in a knife block set up on the kitchen counter, where it is out of reach, than in a drawer where even a small child can easily get to it.
Kids will be kids. They will do the strangest and the dumbest things. That's why, as adults, it's our job to protect them and to teach them. They will grow up eventually.
