Rails And Accessories For The M16
No other rifle has lent itself to customization like the AR15. A whole industry has grown up around replacing literally every component of this venerable rifle. One of the leading companies producing AR15 upgrades is Troy Industries. Troy have become one of the most influential OEM suppliers of parts for AR15 and other platforms in the United States.
Troy's back-up iron sights really made their name in the business and are the standard against which all others are compared. Aluminium and stainless steeel construction makes these sights inherently rust resistant. The entire range of Troy Battle Sights is produced in a Type III black or matte earth anodized finish. Large and small apertures are provided on a conventional, A1 style L shaped flip up element. The large aperture is set to 300 meters and the small to 500. The sights user the A1 adjustment system. The rear uses a coin or a bullet tip and the front the GI adjuster tool or Troy's own variant thereof. The clicks use the familiar 0.5 MoA value.
For those who want an instant transition between optical and iron sights, Troy make non folding fore and rear sight units. You have the choice of M16 type foresight ears or an HK/AK type open circle which can be used as a fast centering foresight element in CQB. The next step-up in price is the basic folding version which folds down to 0.460" high and is available in the standard GI height and a reduced height version for use on gas piston rifles. Gas block versions of the front sights are also available. The rearsights are held down or up by two spring detent mechanisms and do not need levers or other protrusions which could foul on gear etc.. The rearsights come with either a standard round aperture or 'Di-optic' Aperture (DOA) which has a diamond shaped aperture with a white line running from each point for long range engagement and an open topped aperture with a single white crossbar for close range. This makes for more rapid and precise shooting. Night shooting can be facilitated by tritium dots, two of which can be supplied either side of the rear aperture and one on the front post.
Troy avoided the use of a cantilever mount by designing their free floating quad rail to extend directly forward from the flat top AR15's receiver rail. Whilst non free floating versions are available and can be mounted in seconds, the free floating versions clamp around the barrel nut, making the joint even stronger and enhancing accuracy. The Troy AR quad rail is available in different lengths for different length gas systems. Some of these quad rails need a low profile gas block whilst others have an opening to take the factory front sight. The two piece construction makes fitting very easy and is secured with a four bolt clamoing system. The units and their covers are available in either black or earth to match other troy accessories and typical AR15 coloration. Replacement of accessories is facilitatied by alphanumerically coded slots and large holes facilitate the dispersion of heat and reduce the weight of the units.
The world's militaries have rediscovered fore-grips over the last decade. They allow much greater control than horizontal fore-ends, particularly in dynamic situations. The Troy Combat Grip is a very rugged and versatile unit. A full length stainless steel locking bar and front and rear cross-slot bars secure and prevent the grip from moving. It contains a sealed storage compartment for batteries etc. and can be configured in full length of 'stubby' lengths. Again it is available in flat black or matte earth. Grip is assisted by a knurled surface.
