How To Release A Zip Tie
Would you believe there are at least three ways to escape a zip tie binding? Until I started looking, I didn’t realize this. These tricks can be nice entertainment. In the event you find yourself in the company of bad guys, this information can save your life. Knowing this information may help you resist the urge to panic in a dangerous circumstance. And THIS can be just what you need to take advantage of an opportunity to escape.
Zip ties are favored for use in human restraints because they are inexpensive and very difficult to break. When your hands are bound in front, you here is what you will need to do to break free.
CREATE SOME SLACK
Place your hands next to each other, palms down, thumbs together, hands balled into fists, when someone places a zip tie on your wrists. Flex your chest to enlarge the span of your shoulders. Your bonds will be tight when they are checked by your captors. Later, when you relax, you should have enough room to release your bindings with a small shim.
A DESIGN FLAW
The teeth on the plastic strip of a zip tie are wedged against a small bit of plastic that acts as a latch in the lock. This latch is engaged by fitting between the teeth when the stip is tugged backwards, locking it in place. A small screwdriver, nail file, straight pin, or another small tool can be inserted in the lock to lift the latch away from the teeth and allow the strip of plastic to slide free. Taking advantage of the extra room in your bindings, you should be able to reach and place the shim into the lock and release your bonds.
REMOVE THE TIE WHILE STILL LOCKED
The first step of this method is to create wiggle room. Cross your wrists and have the thumbs of each hand facing up. This enlarges the circumference that will be needed to secure your hands. Move your elbows wide so that when the zip tie is tightened, you will gain even more room. Rotate your arms so that your hands are facing each other (like a child praying) when you are no longer watched. Gradually work the zip tie towards your fingers until one thumb is free. Pull one hand through and then the other will slip free easily.
BREAK THE LOCK
The third method seems a bit counterintuitive. The zip tie should be placed tightly on the wrists rather than creating wiggle room. Present your hands to be bound with the hands curled into fists and the palms facing each other. Try to have the lock resting on top of your wrists where the two arms meet. Raise your hands to the face or chest level with elbows bent. Next, force your arms quickly downward and backwards, running your elbows past your sides, attempting to touch your shoulder blades together. This will place great force onto the lock that will cause it to snap and fail.
