The Enterprise View Of Credit Card Interchanges Fees
Congressional legislation that will reduce card repayment fees passed past year. In July of this year, this legislation is designed to be implemented. A few legislators have submitted new legislation that would remove this new requirement. The legislation cites these fee limits as a reason businesses can be "less competitive". These limits, however, are precisely what could save small businesses. Source for this article - A small business perspective on payment systems by MoneyBlogNewz.
Card interchange fees to pay
Any fees paid to use a credit or debit card is called a card interchange fee. These are called "swipe fees," as well. They cost between 12 and 75 cents every time someone utilizes the card. This "interchange fee" is in addition to a certain percentage of the transaction amount that is charged for use of the card. The company that provides the card machine, the bank doing the transaction and the card processor are all the things the interchange and percentage fees pay. Last year, the fees added up to $50 billion. The United States interchange fees are twice and much as Europe’s interchanges fees. To be able to stop interchange fees, congress may try to push legislation forward say it would stop competitiveness amongst U.S. businesses.
How interchange fees affect business
It is hard to decide if business should take a charge card. Accepting credit cards means paying a fee and a percentage on every credit card transaction, plus most credit card processors charge a monthly fee, so the costs are high. It is worse than that for small businesses that do not have lots of extra money. Small Businesses then have to add additional costs that are passed on to consumers. High costs, additional charges and even minimum needs are sometimes added. More people are willing to use your product or service when you accept credit cards. Also, consumers are more likely to make bigger purchases.
My experience
I own a small business with my husband. We offer several services at the small business. We never even considered not taking credit cards knowing it was necessary. Without a physical location and relatively low monthly sales volume, the $20 to $100 monthly fee of a traditional credit card terminal simply did not make sense. A flat percentage of transactions are charged with Square where we run our credit cards. It does this through a smartphone. Sales are only at $300 a month. We only pay about $8 in charge card fees every month. The profit goes down quite a bit after adding on $30 in small business taxes and $26 in sales tax. The suppliers have to be paid also. The reduction in charge card interchange fees would allow us to reduce the amount we charge consumers or be able to actually hire employees. The interchange fees doing down help businesses a lot. They can go from “surviving” to “competitive” easily.
