The Well KnownSwiss Army Knife - Handy In Any Chore Situation
Karl Elsener, who owned a surgical instrument company, became dismayed in 1891 when he discovered that the small utility knives that the Swiss government were issuing their soldiers were actually made in Germany. Elsener's national pride drove him to finding a way to have the knives manufactured in Switzerland. He took on the production of the first Modell 1890 knives near the end of 1891. After applying a number of modifications, the versatility of a Swiss army knife became apparent to the world at large.
The model numbers of the knives refer to the year the knife was introduced. The original Modell (German spelling) 1890 was issued to the Swiss army ostensibly to assist the soldiers to open their food cans and to take apart their Schmidt-Rubin rifles. This knife had a can-opener, blade, screwdriver and a reamer. The grips were a dark colored oak wood that was changed to ebony at a later stage.
The knives were available to US servicemen from their PX stores following World War II, but having problems saying Schweizer Offiziersmesser, the official name for the knives, the men called them Swiss Army Knives, a name that has stuck to this day. This name has now been officially registered as a trademark by the Victorinox company and all subsidiaries producing this type of knife.
The red hand grips with the white cross emblazoned on it, the multiple blades and flip out tools make the Swiss Army Knife the most recognized compact tool kit in the world and it is revered by fishermen, campers, hunters and by anyone who can appreciate this small, portable, quality tool kit capable of performing so many tasks. Enthusiasts can choose from a vast range of models designed to accomplish an equally large range of jobs. There are so many designs to choose from that range between the simple model that has a single blade, a reamer, a screwdriver and a combination of bottle opener and can opener, up to the huge Giant, spanning nine inches across and armed with a total of 87 tools capable of accomplishing 141 separate functions. Furthermore red is not the only color. Increasingly you find people who opt for the black Swiss army knives.
The knives are produced by Victorinox and its subsidiary, Wenger, and one of their most popular knives is the Classic Knife measuring just three inches long and offering great strength without the bulk. This knife sports a keyring, enabling it to be carried on a key chain for convenience. Among the range of tools available on this small wonder, are small blades, a toothpick, tweezers, nail files, scissors, various screwdriver heads and a host of other tools that may never be needed but that are there if they are needed.
The knives have been propelled into the twenty first century by the introduction of the Presentation Master, a futuristic design which features a laser pointer, memory stick and fingerprint scanner that has built in data encryption. All the features of the knife including the laser pointer and data storage drives may be folded away or can be pulled inside the knife on springs while not being used. Because it has no blades, this device may be carried onto aircraft.
A favorite for the outdoors and with the survivalist, is the Champion Plus Swiss army knife, fitted with tools like a serrated saw blade, punch tool, hook remover, reamer, fish scaler and a host of others. A black leather pouch or a waterproof pouch are available allowing the tool to be carried around conveniently.
The knives may be sharpened using either steel or a whetstone, although Victorinox recommend using the steel and, in fact manufacture a knife sharpener, precisely for this purpose. With so many uses, the versatility of a Swiss army knife can not be disputed.
