The Famous Swiss Army Knife Is Known For Its Amazing Versatility
In 1891, Karl Elsener, the owner of a surgical steel company, was dismayed to learn the Utility Pocket Knives issued to the Swiss Army were manufactured in Germany. Elsener felt that any products supplied to Swiss soldiers should be made by Swiss people in Switzerland. Elsener started producing the first of the knives, the Modell 1890, towards the end of 1891 after obtaining the contract. Later, after a few modifications, the rest of the world was able to enjoy the versatility of a Swiss army knife.
The year that any particular model of knife had been introduced onto the market can be determined from the Modell (the German Spelling) number. The first knife, Modell 1890, had been given to Swiss soldiers so that they could open cans and disassemble and assemble their army issue rifles. This particular knife consisted of a knife blade, screwdriver, can-opener and a reamer. Its grips were made from dark oak which was later replaced by ebony.
Us army personnel after World War II had the opportunity to buy these knives from PX stores on their army bases, but as they had difficulty saying Schweizer Offiziersmesser, which was the official name of the knife at the time, they began to call them Swiss Army Knives and this is what they became known as world wide. This name was registered by Victorinox and its subsidiaries, who produce the knives, as a trademark, in subsequent years.
Recognized throughout the world with their red handles, white crosses, a few blades and several fold-out tools, the Swiss army knife is used by campers, fishermen, hunters, and in fact by anyone who requires a certain set of tools for a multitude of jobs. A vast array of designs is available for almost any activity, from the smaller models having only one blade, a combination can-opener bottle opener, a reamer and a screwdriver to the Giant, which is nine inches wide and boasts 87 different tools and can perform 141 different functions. Some people actually prefer the classic looks of the black Swiss army knife
The knives are produced by Victorinox and its subsidiary, Wenger, and one of their most popular knives is the Classic Knife measuring just three inches long and offering great strength without the bulk. This knife sports a keyring, enabling it to be carried on a key chain for convenience. Among the range of tools available on this small wonder, are small blades, a toothpick, tweezers, nail files, scissors, various screwdriver heads and a host of other tools that may never be needed but that are there if they are needed.
The Presentation Master has ushered the Swiss Army Knife into the Information Age with its ultra modern features like a flash drive incorporating a fingerprint scanner enabling encryption of its data, a laser pointing device, and other computer accessories. All of the devices can be folded into the body by hand or pulled in by springs while they are not in use. The model without blades may be taken on board an aircraft.
Extending the range, knives such as the Champion Plus are fitted with such tools as a small saw with serrated blade, fish scaler, hook remover, punch tool, reamer and many more. A waterproof pouch is available as well as a leather belt pouch enabling the knife to be carried on the person. Other models include the Climber Swiss army knife and the Spartan.
Sharpening of any knife may be accomplished by using steel or whetstone, but Victorinox do advise the use of steel and actually supply a knife sharpener to accomplish this. There can be no denying the versatility of a Swiss army knife.
