Ancient Warriors Used Practice Wooden Swords And Saved Their Steel Swords For Battle
For a number of centuries the Wooden Sword has been used for training purposes. The Practice Wooden Sword has been used by many cultures including China, Japan, Renaissance Europe, Scotland and Rome and more recently in modern Europe and the United States.
It is cheaper to replace a wooden sword than a steel sword so they are often referred to as "wasters". The reason wood has become the material of choice for training swords is that high quality steel swords are more easily damaged and are expensive to replace.
A steel blade would fatigue with constant use in training which would make it unreliable as a weapon so the ancient warriors used wood as a substitute.
Wooden Sword Practice is therefore a cheap means of training because the cost of replacing a wooden training sword is substantially less that the cost of replacing a steel sword. Because it is blunt there is less risk of injury from the wooden sword when training if it comes in contact with another person.
Blunt steel swords are available, but they are more easily damaged, carry a higher risk of injury than a similar impact from a wooden sword which is less expensive.
Due to the high risk of serious injury or death sharpened steel swords are generally not used for training purposes.
Despite differences in weight and balance between a wooden practice sword and the equivalent steel sword, the user of the wooden sword will develop feel and technique making them ready to purchase their first steel sword.
Western Martial Arts and some Japanese Martial Arts use Wooden Practice Swords many of which are similar in handling and feel characteristics to the original steel weapon.
The starting point for anyone wanting to train in swordsmanship is the wooden training sword because they can minimize their outlay and train with comparative safety as distinct from the cost and higher risk of injury with a genuine steel sword.
